You "Like That"?
yapping about rap beefs & what lies within them
Now where there’s smoke… there usually is fire and this Future/Metro Boomin album is being compared to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
As many hip-hop /rap fans have been glazing this Future & Metro Boomin album, many cannot stop yapping about Kendrick taking shots at his colleagues on the song “Like That”.
It was indeed a headshot right at J. Cole and Drake for the insinuation of them being a “Big 3” on their song “First Person Shooter”. I would say Kung Fu Kenny’s diss is more a shot at Champagne Papi than Jermaine as the signs are pointing toward K.Dot not being a friend/fan of Jimmy from Degrassi.
He uses Aubrey’s own comparisons of himself to Michael Jackson against him by calling himself Prince and furthering it with the claim that he makes more impactful albums AND will outlive him. Whether he is was referring to just their art or literally outliving him is left for interpretation.
A lot of us also know this is not Kendrick’s first time addressing the room and fucking the world for 72 hours. (God damn I feel amazing, damn I’m in the matrix).
Real rap fans remember the fire he set on Twitter (which was just starting to get popular back then) back around 2012-2013. I don’t even know if I can call it a verse, more so an A-Bomb to the rap community. On the unreleased song “Control”, he quite literally told everyone (including J. Cole and Drake) that he is friends with them but is trying to take all their fans.
So the real question is… where’s the beef? Does he really have beef with Drake and/or J. Cole?
It is almost certain that said beef lies mostly with Mr. OVO and not really J. Cole. Whether or not it is real/the severity of it is what remains in question. There is a decade long history of these two not liking each other.
If I were to guess.. THIS IS A FUCKING GUESS mind you, Kendrick probably wrote Drake a multitude of verse/hooks/songs for Drake without receiving proper credit. Drizzy probably jacked a few flows among other things in this guess.
What has ensued afterward to me is what I would consider great fucking marketing. It gives off the natural beef flavor of a 90’s/2000’s rap beef but does lack a certain sizzle.
Artificial rap beef mind you is a real thing and used today in the industry to keep names relevant, buzzing, and streams up. Especially in the digital streaming age this verse got every TikToker and mindless writer like myself talking about this. So whether or not there is fire behind this smoke is yet to be seen/heard of yet.
Now the thing that remains a mystery is who said what in the scrapped Marcellus Wiley interview.
This is the key to the puzzle & we cannot really solve it. Until we get that piece we just get great diss tracks/verses. Where does this rank among beefs? It’s pretty high up there as it’s the best rappers of the 2010’s taking shots at each other for a decade now.
For brevity of this post I am not getting into the Future/Metro beef with Drake/21 Savage nor the Drake beef with The Weeknd but the graphic below will show how this beef has ignited what Twitter is calling “Civil War”.
Another thing to add (that I Found on TikTok) is to compare the names of all the tracks on Mr. Graham’s “For All the Dogs” and Metro/Future’s “We Don’t Trust You”.
Some other rap beefs I have been alive and conscious to witness over the last few years include but are not limited to the following:
Pusha T and Drake
Drake & Kanye
Drake & Meek Mill
Eminem & MGK
Hoodie Allen & Mike (formerly known as Mike Stud) - this was just fucking hilarious
Seeing Drake’s name on here so many times begs the question… is he really that annoying or is this just insanely good marketing? I’ll let the readers decide in the comments.
