Not Suitable For Work
Mindy Kaling's New Show that You Should Watch
ALERT ALERT ALERT! Mindy Kaling’s new show just dropped on Hulu and I for one fuck with everything it is about. Not Suitable for Work is a modern coming of age sitcom about twenty somethings living in Murray Hill or as I call it, the Southie of NYC. It follows five young adults living across the hall from each other. Without divulging too much I am going to describe the character’s and what their energy reminds me of in order to paint a picture of them best as I can.
Abby Chilukuri played by Avantika Vandanapu
One of the two main woman characters who works as an assistant to a celebrity stylist. She is supposed to have the coolness factor of Cece from New Girl (not because they are both Indian it is more so the line of the work that they’re in - fashion/modeling) meeting some of Rachel’s energy in friends. She is a strong character who is played well as we see her finding her own way in the fashion world and in her personal life.
Abby’s character is rather interesting because we see men lining up for her, but she remains focused on her work similar to Robin from HIMYM. Her love life is something that will definitely have its ups and downs as the show continues. She adds a great comedic element when she and her roommate AJ are on screen together in a yin yang flow.
AJ Pascarelli played by Ella Hunt
Take Jessica Day but make her a finance private equity bro, has only one friend (Abby), and is very quirky. AJ is from Dorchester and moves to New York to take a job at a PE firm (where she works with Davis) and moves in with Abby after Abby’s ex-boyfriend moves to Nashville. Not losing their apartment becomes priority #1 very quickly in the show. AJ is a character you see put her foot in her mouth literally and figuratively before, during, and after work. She is in the midst of a fascinating love triangle that I won’t spoil part of it reminds me of a split between Jim/Pam & Dwight/Angela with one character and another that will certainly boil into something really interesting if the ending of episode 3 carries throughout the first season.
Davis Beau Bradley Barret III played by Will Angus
For any of my Friday Beers/Almost Friday enthusiasts I think the only thing missing with this character is that we need to know about his debilitating crentis condition. But seriously this character was perfectly cast for Will as he plays a PE finance bro who desperately wants a girlfriend but comes on WAY too strong. His character has a Ross/Schmidt comedic element to it that blends in well amongst the rest of the rest cast. Will has probably heard this before, but he reminds me a lot of Ken Marino.
Kel Washington played by Nicholas Duvernay
Providing some New Girl Nick energy but this time let’s make him a wannabe actor dropping out of med school. Kel is a glue guy in the apartment with Davis and their other roommate Josh who I will brief you on after I am done with Kel. Kel comes from a family of doctors who he is trying not to disappoint but his apathy for medicine is bringing him toward acting.
Kel’s character development throughout this season will be interesting because he is not good at flirting with Abby (spoiler alert but barely) as he seems to be coming into his own as a substitute English teacher. His character is great at providing context throughout the first few episodes of back stories and other such things. Only disappointment here was when I went to look up the actor I thought it would’ve been cool if he were related to Devin Duvernay (last names made think of this) but to no avail, the internet says there is no relation.
Josh Titlebaum played by Jack Martin
Nepotism’s most conflicted character. Jack Martin illuminates audiences into the conflict of those born on third base; how being the son of a CEO actually makes it hard for him to be a hard worker. I am only half kidding here because this character is one that from the jump you want to hate but as the show progresses you find yourself sympathizing for him a little, then he makes you hate him again, then back to sympathy. Similar to Barney from HIMYM minus the womanizing, actually it’s the total opposite in that department in terms of that character’s love life. But similarly to Barney, could be colliding with his one of his best friends as the show continues.
I could begin to divulge about the other characters in the show, but I think I would begin spoiling more than I want to! Congrats to Mindy and the entire cast for putting this together and excited to see how the rest of it plays out!
